Reiki vs Kundalini Activation A Gentle Reset or an Awakening of Life Force?

Some energy practices feel like being held. Others feel like being called forward.

Reiki and Kundalini Activation both work with the unseen layers of the body, the field, and the nervous system. Both can feel deeply restorative. Both can bring emotions to the surface, clarity, warmth, release, stillness, or a sense of being more connected to yourself.

Yet the experience, intention, and energetic movement are very different.

Reiki is often a soft return. Rooted in a Japanese hands-on healing lineage that comes from Dr. Mikao Usui, it invites the participant to actively rest, receive, and reset within a gentle field of support. The body is not asked to perform. The mind is not asked to figure anything out. The participant is held in a passive, nurturing embrace of energy, allowing the system to come home to itself. Reiki, works with the universal life force energy, allowing the practitioner to become a conduit of this frequency, and channeling it through the participants body for their highest good, to balance them - mentally, emotionally, and physically. It feels like a warmg hug, soft, subtle, and supportive, and is recommended for anyone, anytime.

Kundalini Activation is more of an awakening current. It is a transmission of energy that meets the participant in a more active way, asking them to participate, often guided by a strong intention. The primal life force of self begins to stir, move, clear, and rise, ready to tackle what needs to be released. What has been dormant, heavy, unwelcome, or out of alignment may come into awareness so it can be released, which can include heavy or repressed emotions, traumatic imprints, or decisions that may need to be accepted. The participant begins to connect with their own life force energy, not as a concept, but as something alive within them, empowering them to take control and ownership of their life through working with their own highly intelligent inner wisdom. This is an activating force, one to work with when you know and trust, you are ready. In order to work with this force, one must be in a steady state of natural preparedness as it was designed as a modality that aids on one's spiritual evolution of ascension.

Both practices can be beautiful. The right one depends on what the system is asking for: softness, support, and restoration, or activation, clearing, and conscious awakening.

Reiki | A Gentle Return To Inner Balance

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice often associated with Mikao Usui, who developed the system in the early 20th century after connecting with the energy of Mount Kurama, just outside of Kyoto. The word is commonly translated as “universal life force energy,” though different lineages describe it in slightly different ways.

A Reiki session is usually quiet, steady, and receptive. The participant lies down fully clothed while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body. The touch is non-invasive and respectful, and can be communicated prior to a session. You are always in control as the recipient. Some practitioners use a set sequence of hand positions, which I personally refer to as the 14 golden hand positions to stimulate and clear energy from the entire being. Others work more intuitively while staying within the tradition and principles of Reiki.

The heart of Reiki is simple: the practitioner acts as a channel for healing energy, and the participant receives.

There is no need to chase an experience. There is no need to visualise, breathe in a certain pattern, or “make” something happen. The session invites the body to soften into safety, as the nervous system responds.

For many people, Reiki feels like:

  • warmth or tingling under the practitioner’s hands

  • a wave of calm moving through the body

  • emotional softening

  • deep rest or sleep

  • a sense of being held

  • spaciousness in the mind

  • gentle release without needing to explain the release

That softness matters. Many people live in a state of constant doing, holding, bracing, or managing. Reiki offers a different rhythm, giving the system permission to stop pushing and simply receive.

Reiki works through passive receiving

One of the clearest differences between Reiki and Kundalini Activation is the role of the participant.

In Reiki, the participant is mostly passive. This does not mean nothing is happening. It means the person does not need to actively direct the energy, they can completely rest, some people even fall asleep. The body and energy field receive support, and the system responds in its own time.

This passive quality can be deeply nourishing. It can feel like returning to a place inside yourself that got buried under stress, emotion, responsibility, or overthinking. It is a great tool when you are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and in need of support.

Reiki is often chosen when someone feels:

  • depleted

  • emotionally tender or highly sensitive

  • anxious or overstimulated

  • chaotic or like they can't relax

  • grieving

  • disconnected from the body

  • in need of care

  • healing after surgery or ill health

  • moving through something they need support through

  • drawn to a softer energetic experience

  • ready to reset without intensity

The energy tends to be gentle rather than forceful. It does not usually feel like a strong surge or clearing vortex. Instead, it may feel like a warm stream, a quiet field, or a deep exhale.

A good Reiki session can feel like the body remembering that it does not have to hold everything all at once.

Kundalini Activation is a transmission of life force

Kundalini Activation is different in tone, movement, and purpose. While Reiki supports a soft reset, Kundalini Activation works more actively, directly the awakened life force energy, to help people realise their own strength, power and inner wisdom.

In many traditions, kundalini is understood as a powerful spiritual energy that rests within the body, often symbolised as 3.5x coiled serpent at the base of the spine, in the root chakra, Muladhara. In Kundalini Activation sessions, the facilitator offers a direct transmission of stimulating energy, often also creating a vortex to hold the high level frequency which naturally brings anything lower than that freqnecy to the surface. The participant lies down after working somatically with the body and breath, and receives the transmission as own life force begins to respond.

This is not the same as forcing kundalini to rise through intense breathwork, strain, or willpower. In a grounded Kundalini Activation space, the process that the facilitator offers, is invitational. The energy moves according to the participant’s system, their intention, and nervous system capacity.

The experience can be subtle or strong. Some people feel waves through the spine, spontaneous movement, emotion, images, heat, shaking, laughter, tears, or deep stillness among many other experiences. Others feel very little during the session but notice shifts afterward, because this is where the true change begins - through integration.

Where Reiki often brings the participant into rest, Kundalini Activation may bring them into aliveness, as it is an activating frequency that promotes change. Shakti, the divine feminine life force, awakens what was dormant, gently asking the participant to live, move, and take action, guiding their life - rather than being passive within it.

It can illuminate what has been sitting beneath the surface: old emotions, stuck patterns, beliefs, numbness, heaviness, or parts of the self that have been waiting to be felt. The energy may move through what is no longer aligned so the participant can reconnect with a clearer inner current.

Kundalini Activation invites active participation from within

Kundalini Activation may look passive from the outside because the participant is often lying down with eyes closed. Yet internally, it is much more active than Reiki.

The participant is not asked to control the process, but their system is actively involved. Their energy body, nervous system, emotional field, and consciousness begin to engage with the transmission. The life force responds from within.

This is why Kundalini Activation can feel like a vortex. The energy does not only soothe. It moves. It stirs. It brings awareness. It may show what is ready to clear and what is ready to come alive.

A participant may feel called to:

  • surrender control and let them higher consciousness lead vs. the mind

  • witness emotion without suppressing it

  • feel what they previously felt afraid to

  • subconsciously let go of what the body, mind and spirit was holding

  • overcome outdated beliefs or perceptions

  • receive inspirational information and key idea formulation

  • allow spontaneous movement, kriya's, light language, shaking, releasing

  • breathe through intensity, laugh, yell, or even scream

  • connect with vocal toning

  • notice what the body wants to release and invite it to let go

  • connect with inner guidance and spirit guides

  • meet a higher frequency of self, quantum leaping into the future

The “highest self” in this context is not an unreachable, perfect version of you. It is the clearer, more connected, more truthful aspect of your being, aligned with the governing mantra of Kundalini Yoga, 'Sat Nam', meaning "I am truth, truth is my essence". Kundalini Activation can bring the participant into contact with that frequency by awakening the energy that already lives inside them.

This is where the practice can be powerful. It does not only offer comfort, but personal empowerment through returning to the truth of self. It can help a person experience themselves as the conduit of their own life force energy, become more responsible of it, and responsive to it.

The main difference? The direction energy...

Reiki and Kundalini Activation both involve receiving energy, but the direction and felt sense are different.

Reiki often feels like energy is being offered to the participant in a soft and supportive way. It pours in, surrounds, balances, and soothes. The practitioner channels the energy, and the participant rests inside it.

Kundalini Activation often feels like energy is awakening from within the participant. The transmission may come through the facilitator, but the participant’s own life force becomes the focus. It rises, moves, clears, and reconnects the person to their inner current.

Reiki

Kundalini Activation

Rooted in a Japanese hands-on energy healing lineage from 1920's

Modern ritualistic approach, anchored in ancient Indian energpracticeses

Gentle, nurturing, and restorative

Activating, clearing, and awakening

Participant receives passively, while resting and restoring

Participant’s life force responds actively from within, intentionally

Often uses hands-on or hands just above the body

Usually involves little or no touch, unless using 'access points' to clear the flow

Supports rest, balance, and a soft reset

Supports release, expansion, and connection to life force

Can feel like being held

Can feel like being opened or called forward

Best for tenderness, depletion, or grounding

Best for readiness, movement, and inner awakening

Neither is better. They serve different energetic needs.

Some days the system needs a blanket. Some days it needs a doorway.

Reiki feels like being held by the field

The beauty of Reiki is its simplicity. It does not demand a breakthrough. It does not ask the participant to confront everything at once. It creates a supportive energetic environment where the body can release through rest.

For some, this is exactly what healing needs to feel like.

The nervous system often opens more easily when it feels safe. Reiki can offer that. The gentle placement of hands, the quiet room, the steady presence of the practitioner, and the subtle flow of energy all work together to create a field of care.

This can be especially helpful for people who are sensitive, tired, grieving, or overwhelmed. When life has felt too sharp, Reiki can be a soft place to land.

A Reiki session may not always feel dramatic, but its effects can be meaningful. The participant may leave feeling lighter, calmer, clearer, or more connected to their body. Sometimes the shift is not loud. It is a quiet return.

Kundalini Activation feels like awakening from the inside

Kundalini Activation can be more dynamic. It may bring the participant face to face with their own energy in a way that feels unfamiliar, powerful, or deeply alive.

The body might move without conscious planning. Emotion might surface. Memories or insights may arise. A person may feel energy traveling up the spine, expanding through the heart, or pulsing through the limbs. They may also feel stillness so deep it feels like the mind has stepped aside.

This does not mean every session is intense. Some are quiet. Some are blissful. Some are emotional. Some are confusing until the integration unfolds later.

The key is that Kundalini Activation tends to work with what is ready to move, and giving it space to truly start integrating over the next 3-14 days. It is an active process, and it asks for you to continue witnessing it move within yourself, and your life.

If something has been dormant, the energy may wake it up.

If something has felt heavy, it may come forward to be witnessed.

If something is no longer aligned, the session may make that clearer.

This is why integration after a session matters the most.

Journaling, rest, water, gentle movement, magnesium glycinate, meditation, gentle pranayama, hydration salts, time in nature, and simple meals can help the body process the experience. The goal is not to chase intensity. The goal is to build a conscious, invitational and devotional relationship with your life force.

What to expect from each session

A Reiki session | Usually begins with a brief check-in. The participant lies down, fully clothed, often under a blanket with some supports like a pillor under their head, or a bolster under their knees, sometimes an electric blanket or heat pillow may be offered as well as an eye pillow to block out unnecesary distractions and light. The practitioner places hands on or near different areas of the body, often aligning with the chakras. The room is quiet or has soft music. The session may feel peaceful, warm, or deeply restful.

A Kundalini Activation session | Begins with an explanation of the process, breathwork or bodywork (e.g. dance, shakingde-armouringng, humming, vocal toning) and guidance around surrendering into the process to meet the self. An intention is set, to guide the frequency of healing so the participant is always in control of their experience. The participant lies down often on a yoga mat without a pillow so the Sushumna nadi is free, open, flowing. Often, music is designed to support the energetic arc of the session, increasing in pace, tone, and volume as it peaks. The facilitator transmits energy, and the participant allows whatever arises, as the witness, the observer, and the empowering force of self. The release may include physical catharsis (movement), emotional release like crying, yelling, screaming or feeling; sensations like warmth, tingling, volts of energy up the spine or in the system; stillness and centredness; or intuitive insight, completion cycles, forgiveness, releasing stuck beliefs, and ego deaths.

In both practices, consent and safety matter. A practitioner should explain touch before using it. The participant should be free to ask questions, pause, or stop. No one should be pressured to have a certain kind of experience.

Energy work is personal. It should never feel performative.

The deeper invitation behind both practices

Reiki and Kundalini Activation may differ in method, but both point toward reconnection.

  • Reiki says: soften, receive, and let yourself be held.

  • Kundalini Activation says: awaken, feel, and let your life force lead.

One brings the participant into a passive, supportive embrace of energy. The other activates an inner current that helps clear what is dormant, heavy, unwelcome, or no longer for the highest good.

Both can bring a person closer to themselves.

One through rest. One through movement.

One through gentle resetting. One through awakened life force.

The most supportive choice is the one that meets the truth of the moment. If the body feels tired, tender, or guarded, Reiki may offer the soft landing that is needed.

If the soul feels ready for movement, release, and a more direct connection with inner power, Kundalini Activation may be the doorway.

Energy work is not about becoming someone else. It is about returning to the self beneath the noise, the self that can rest, rise, release, and remember who they really are.
